The design and program for Shine Spa, situated in the recently constructed Mid-City Market along Carrollton Avenue, developed out of the client’s desire to expand their small business into multiple locations and to create a brand identity to inform the future growth of the company. Each store will center around  one of the four elements (fire, air, wind, water), with the Mid-City location focusing on fire.

The program includes a bright, simple retail storefront to highlight the Spa’s products and services, which are also inspired by the four elements. Moveable furniture allows the space to shift for varying programmatic needs including community events for a healthy lifestyle and group exercise / meditation classes. The cashwrap is constructed of  a large CNC routed panel and orange 3form®  Fizz panel. A large, curved wall delineates the retail shopping from the quieting experience of the spa treatment services, and hints at the spaces beyond through materiality by being bookended  with reclaimed plaster lath of varying shades.

Around the curved wall, one enters into a quieting space of charred hues, delicate lighting, and lower ceiling heights for a more intimate experience. A routed birch wood screen serves as separation from the waiting area and circulation, and also dually acts as visual stimulus for meditation and reflection. Three treatment rooms, a couple’s massage room, a body treatment room, and a room for facials, each have custom millwork catered to the particular services at the spa. Reinforcing the concept of fire, a plane of reclaimed wood lath runs vertically up the walls of the treatment rooms and folds onto the ceiling.

The Owner’s original location, Spa Aria in Hotel Monteleone, was renovated by studioWTA in 2018.
